‘Look, I can speak correctly’: learning vocabulary and pronunciation through websites equipped with automatic speech recognition technology

Speaking skills generally receive little attention in traditional English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, and this is especially the case secondary education Indonesia. A vocabulary deficit poor pronunciation hinder learners their efforts to improve speaking proficiency. In present study, we investigated effects of using two language learning websites, I Love Indonesia (ILI) NovoLearning (NOVO). These websites are equipped with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology, each website providing different types immediate feedback. We measured written receptive productive knowledge 40 target words before after intervention which 146 students practiced these ASR-based compared it that control group (n = 86). The successfully helped enhance vocabulary. Twenty-four participated spoken pre-and post-test pronouncing same words. developed an approach measure showed treatment groups outperformed group. Our results indicate our technology successful improving skills.
